Mother’s Day: Fall Safety Gift

Posted on May 11, 2013

On Mother’s Day as we celebrate our mothers and those who have been like mothers to us, let’s give these wonderful women a very special and unexpected gift; our close observation of their fall safety risk.  Since falls are the leading cause of injuries for individuals 65 and older and since over 95% of hip fractures are caused by falls with the rate for women being almost three times the rate for men, this is a very special and timely gift.

As our loved ones age and gradually lose visual acuity, muscle strength and coordination, the home environment can become increasingly unsafe. For example, throw rugs or clutter can turn into major fall risks. So, when you are visiting your loved ones on Mother’s Day, observe them carefully as they walk, reach, bend, sit, stand, climb stairs and get in and out of the car.  And go through a safety check with them. Make it casual and conversational. Tell them how important their safety is to you.  The CDC’s fall prevention checklist is a great room-by-room fall prevention guide.  As well, the CDC offers practical tips to help prevent falls and keep your loved ones safe.

Let’s give a fall safety gift to the women who mean so much to us on Mother’s Day!
